The Chinese Society for Microbiology (CSM) was founded on December18th, 1952. CSM is a non-profit academic organization of Chinese scientists specializing in microbiology. The main purposes of the CSM are to promote scientific research, organize academic activities, provide academic consultation and spread popular science.
During the past 60 years, CSM has made significant contributions to the development of microbiology, the popularization of science and technology among the public, the encourage of professional talents, and the economic and social development in China. Meanwhile, CSM plays important roles in the non-official academic cooperation, disseminating microbiology knowledge and bringing up junior scientists. Besides above works, CSM has done many effective works for increasing friendship and promoting interchange in international exchange.

Up to now, CSM has over 16000 members and consists of 21 professional committees that cover a wide range of specialties, including General Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Agricultural Microbiology, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Veterinary Microbiology, Aetiology of Zoonoses, Mycology, Virology, Biologics, Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology, Analytical Microbiology, Model and Control of Biochemical Process, Enzyme Engineering, Environmental Microbiology, Interferon, Brewing Division, Microbial Toxins, Microbial Resources, Clinical Microbiology, Microbial Biosecurity. CSM has brought together scientists in the microbiology community to participate in conferences, congresses, workshops, symposia, training courses and field excursions, providing them with forums for discussion of major issues in science and technology relevant to microbiology.

CSM publishes seven microbiological journals, including Acta Microbiologica Sinica, Chinese Journal of Biotechnology, Microbiology China, Chinese Journal of Zoonoses, Chinese Journal of Virology, Journal of Microbiology. CSM Newsletter is also published fourth every year to keep CSM members updated with microbiological news and academic exchange.
